Introduction: Becoming Spiritual & Becoming Disciplined

With a friend, your family or in your small group, discuss the following questions:
- What do you think, or how do you feel, about spiritual disciplines being based on God, rather than on you?
- Is it easy or difficult for you to live with an awareness of the paramount importance of the spiritual (1 Tim 4:10)? Is God easy or difficult to recognize? Share a story of a real-life problem with a spiritual solution.
- What does it mean for the Holy Spirit to live in us? How do we experience this? What does it look like? Feel like?
- Discuss the idea that our goal as Christians is to know the Lord, rather than to become better people. Do you agree? Why or why not?
- Do you know any friends or couples that share mannerisms, expressions, or features? Share your funniest examples of behavior mimicry. Do you think God’s mannerisms can rub off on us like this? How have you experienced it?
- When do you find it hardest and easiest to yield, or submit, to other people in your life? Share specific examples of yielding (or not yielding) to others. What does yielding, or submitting, to God look like?
- What's the hardest part about spiritual disciplines for you?
