Your Kingdom Come—The Gospel of Matthew

Go & Tell (Matthew 28:16-20)

With a friend, your family or in your small group, discuss the following questions:

  1. This week marks the final message in our sermon series on the book of Matthew, Your Kingdom Come. As you reflect back on the series a whole, what stands out to you? Is there a particular passage in Matthew’s gospel that has been particularly meaningful to you this year? What have you found challenging? Is there a message that resonated for you? What thoughts or ideas do you hope to hold onto and remember?
  2. As you think back on your own faith journey, is there a moment or period of time in your life that you would consider to be the beginning of your walk with God? What first stirred you to want to follow Jesus? (or, if you have not yet made a decision to follow Jesus, what has drawn you to explore your faith in this Christian context?)
  3. Read Matthew 28:16-20 together. Take some time to reflect on these verses. What do you notice? What stands out?
  4. Can you relate to the disciples’ experience of doubt? How has doubt shown up in your story? In what ways do you find doubt difficult to deal with? What do you find most helpful when you are experiencing doubt? Can you hold doubt and faith at the same time? Why or why not?
  5. Matthew 28:16-20 is called the Great Commission. It is the moment Jesus sent his disciples to go and make disciples of all the nations. As you reflect on the accounts of the early church found in the New Testament, how did the disciples live out this mission that Jesus game to them?
  6. How do you see this mission being lived out by followers of Jesus today? In what ways, if any, do you try to live this out in your own life? In our unique culture today, what are the challenges that we face, as we seek to share the Good News of Jesus with others?
  7. There are many ideas about what “the Gospel” is, that we are meant to share with the world. What do you think best describes what the Gospel, the Good News of Jesus, is? How can this good news be shared in such a way that people are truly drawn into a life of discipleship?
  8. In order to live out the Great Commission to go and make disciples, we also must be on the journey of discipleship. This means not only believing in Jesus, but actively following Him, and allowing our lives to be shaped by Him. How are you doing in your own journey of discipleship?

Prayer and Action Item

Pray for one another out of the key points that were discussed. Pray for an ever deepening commitment to discipleship in each of your lives. Pray that God would guide you towards ways that you can participate in the mission of helping others to know and follow Jesus.
