Reading & Being Read

With a friend, your family or in your small group, discuss the following questions:

  1. How have you normally used the Bible?
  2. What do you think about the quote from Lesslie Newbigin’s friend: "I can’t understand why you missionaries present the Bible to us in India as a book of religion. It is not a book of religion–and anyway  we have plenty of books of religion in India. We don’t need any more! I find in your Bible a unique interpretation of universal history, the history of the whole of creation and the history of the human race… That is unique. There is nothing else in the whole religious literature of the world to put alongside it."
  3. Read Luke 24:13-27 and John 5:39-47. According to these passages, to whom do the Scriptures point? How could reading the Bible as  the true story of the world that points to Jesus impact your Bible reading?
  4. What are some intentional practices you could implement personally, and with others, to help you read and be read by Scripture?
  5. How could others encourage you to do this well?
