Isaiah 49:1-7

Date: April 6, 2025

Speaker: Joel Miles

1. Looking Back: What We've Learned So Far

  • As we reflect on Isaiah 40–55, what have been the major themes we've seen so far?
  • What specific verses or ideas have stuck with you personally? Why do you think they’ve stood out?

2. The Servant of the Lord: Who Is He?

  • Read Isaiah 41:8–9; 42:1–3; and 44:21.
How is the servant of the Lord described in these passages?
Based on these verses, how would you define or identify the servant? What stands out to you about how God speaks to or about the servant?
  • Read Isaiah 49:1–5.
How do these verses deepen the complexity of the servant’s identity?
How might this dual role (as both Israel and a representative of Israel) shape the way we understand the servant’s mission?

3. God's Purpose for Israel

  • Read Genesis 3:15 and Genesis 12:1–3.
According to these foundational passages, what was Israel’s purpose in God’s plan for the world?
How do these verses show both the privilege and responsibility of being God’s people?
  • How does this help us understand why God calls Israel His “servant” in Isaiah 40-55?

4. Israel’s Failure and God’s Faithfulness

  • Though Israel was chosen to bless the world, they often failed. How did God deal with their sin throughout history?
How is the story of Joseph an example of God using a rejected servant to bring blessing?
Can you think of other biblical figures who reflect this same pattern?
  • How does this recurring pattern of God raising up a savior relate to the servant of the Lord theme in Isaiah 49?

5. The Servant’s Mission: Hope for the World

  • Read Isaiah 49:5–7.
How do these verses describe the servant’s mission?
How is this mission both for Israel and beyond Israel?
What hope does this passage offer for people who feel far from God?
  • Why is it so crucial to see Jesus as the ultimate and only fulfillment of this servant’s mission?
How does God’s pattern of sending saviors throughout history ultimately point to Jesus?

6. Living It Out: Trusting the Servant

  • What does it mean to look to Jesus alone for salvation—not just once, but every day?
How does this challenge the way we think about the promises or movements of the world around us?
  • How should understanding Jesus as the Servant shape the way we think about the church’s mission today?
What does it look like to be a community shaped by the servant—his character, his humility, his mission?
