Colossians: Setting Our Sights on Jesus

With a friend, your family or in your small group, discuss the following questions:

1. Read verses 6-10. How is the call in verses 6-7 similar to verse 8? How are they different? According to 9-10, why does Paul not want the Colossians to be taken captive?
2. How does the language of verse 8 show us the seriousness of Paul's command in verse 8?
3. Read verses 16-23. While it is clear that there is some form of legalism going on, it seems that Paul is truly warning against a mixing of Christianity and these rules (i.e. syncretism). How do you think we are tempted to mix the message of Christ with the message of our culture?
4. Why do you think we are so tempted by syncretism?
5. How is truly believing and knowing Christ the remedy to this? How do verses 11-15 show us this?
6. How can you pray and encourage one another to set your sights on Jesus and to root and build your lives on him?
